I had a smaller overflow tank for a while, I mounted it under the nose panel, hugging the frame towards the driver's side. The problem is it was much smaller than an OEM one and would easily overflow and drip coolant on the ground on a hot day. When the system cooled down, it would suck up less coolant than it spat out, so it would gradually lose coolant. On that basis, I would consider relocating the stock overflow tank.
